Marker Policies On The Line
Following on from a couple of responses to Hudson Young’s work down the shortside list week, I wanted to cover some differences in marker systems close to the line.
I don’t think the idea that first marker the first marker goes to the threat1 is all that common in first grade. The threat constantly changes. Who decides what the threat is? What if there is more than one?
Instead, we see most teams send their first marker to the long side and second marker down the shortside.
The Newcastle Knights offered a prime example of what that looks like when defending this last play against the Wests Tigers:
